作為球員卡的創始國，美利堅眾合國發展球員卡的歷史已經相當悠久。根據考證，最早發行的卡片大概是在120年前，也就是在西元1880年代，由煙草製造商所推出的。早期的球員卡做為買香煙的贈品（附在香煙盒中），由於反應不錯，糖果和玩具製造商也起而效之，逐漸形成了美國特有的一種收藏品。

沒有人可以百分之百確訂第一張發行的球員卡為何，不過發明球員卡這種東東的傢伙肯定是個天才，誰會想到在100多年後球員卡市場已經成為每年營業額上億美元的龐大工業。個人對這位不知名人士的推崇更勝過在拉斯維加斯蓋下第一座賭場（火鶴）的那位仁兄！
根據專家考究的結果，第一家製造球員卡的公司應該是Goodwin & Co., maker of Old Judge and Gypsy Queen 這家煙草製造商，他們在1886年到1890年間發行了2000種以上的棒球卡，不過早期的球員大多不太有名，以致於這些至今並沒有引起大家太大的興趣。
第一家正式專門生產球員卡的TOPPS公司，也就在這個年代應運而生，並從1951年至今，始終是球卡界的巨人。市場上最受歡迎，且流通量最大的，大多是TOPPS所出品的新人卡，許多收藏家也從小到老都養成每年集完一整套TOPPS棒球的習慣。

而第二家球員公司Fleer和Donruss，則是到了1980年TOPPS在反托拉斯法中敗訴後，才在隔年的1981年正代發行球員卡。美國的球員卡，也從此逐漸進入了戰國時代。
真正的卡片之王是1910年由American Tobacco Company 所發行的T-206這套卡，其中的Honus Wagner球員卡尤其是王中之王。Wagner是海盜隊的遊擊手，綽號叫做「The Flying Dutchman(飛翔的荷蘭人！？)，他曾連續17個球季打擊率在三成以上，拿過8次打擊王、5次盜壘王，不用說一定是名人堂成員之一。

據說他不抽煙也不嚼煙草，因此對於煙草公司拿他來出卡表示不滿。經抗議過後導致卡片被回收，也因此在市場上流通的卡片數量相當少。不過也有人說Wagner有嚼煙草，是因為權利金的問題才與煙草公司鬧翻。事實倒底是如何，至今眾說紛紜已不可考。

T-206的Wagner球員卡受到大家的高度關切是在1991年。當時的職業冰球NHL之 洛杉磯國王隊的明星--「冰球皇帝」Wayne Gretzy與老闆Bruce McNall兩人，都認為這張卡未來有極佳的增值潛力，因此在拍賣會中合資以破天荒的45萬1,000美元的高價標得。後來由於McNall破產，Gretzy便以22萬5,000美元買下另一半的擁有權。

Gretzy的眼光果然正確，他在1996年便以64萬美元賣出，等於放個五年就有將近600多萬台幣進帳。不過如果你認為這樣已經夠划算就錯了，這張卡在2001年7月被放在拍賣網站ebay上競標，結標價高達1,10萬美元（且得標的買方還必須另外支付16萬美元的手續費）。等於只不過又經過了5年，卡價就又高漲了將近一倍，真是放的越久賺得久兇！

拋開T-206不談，球員卡真正成為美國全國性收藏品，是1950年代，也就是俗稱的黃金運動年代（The Golden Age of sports）。因為當時電視機開始普及，使得像Mickey Mantle、Willie Mays等好手都成為了舉國知名的棒球英雄，連帶也引起大家收藏球員卡的興趣。

那時候還沒有Internet，球員卡背面的紀錄因此成為許多小朋友認識棒球的第一步。「不知道Mantle在哪一年拿下MVP」，「不知道Mays在那一年打了幾支全壘打」，在當時是一件很遜的事情。而許多小男孩會在腳踏車後輪旁綁上一張球卡，這樣騎車時就會發出「帕達帕達」的拉風聲音，這在當時可是一定要的啦！
